High school seniors: Do you have questions? We have answers. Chat with Scripps students here!

The transition to college can be a scary thing, but at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, we hope to make those changes as seamless as we can. Through this student-run blog, we wanted to give both incoming freshmen and prospective Bobcats the chance to ask questions and get advice about OU from current students themselves. Post your questions or comments below, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible! You can be as general or specific as you’d like — trust us, we know someone who knows the answer or has the experience you’re looking for. You can also talk to us on Facebook and Twitter @scrippsjschool, or email scrippsou@gmail.com.

Hi, are there clubs to join if I want to major in advertising?

    • Brooke Bunce says:

Yes! There are many ad-oriented organizations. There is Ohio University Advertising Association (Ad Club) that works to create ad campaigns for national clients which are then entered into the National Student Advertising Competition. They also host tons of speakers and workshops and take trips to conferences in place like Chicago and New York.

There is also a branch of Ad Club called Thumbprint Advertising, a student-run advertising agency that works with local clients to create real ad campaigns around Athens.

Plus, you can always join any other organization/publication on campus and work on their advertising team- it’s something people overlook and that’s always needed.

I hope that helps! Feel free to email me at bb754009@ohio.edu if you have any questions at all!

Hi Kylie, I am an Ohio University Advertising Association executive board member and I am this year’s campaign director for the National Student Advertising Competition. Everything Brooke told you is spot on. I just wanted to drop my contact information as well in case you have any specific questions about Ad Club. Feel free to email me at ch159208@ohio.edu.

Also, here is our NSAC campaign book from last year for JCPenney. Check it out!

    Hello,

I applied to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism this past November. However, upon receiving my admissions letter from OU, I could not find any word on whether or not I had been accepted. Although I have found no information on when applicants will know whether they are accepted or can go through the appeals process online, my school newspaper’s adviser says that some applicants do not know of the final decisions until May 1. In my case, my test scores exceeded the minimum ACT score, but my GPA was a bit lower than desired.

Thank you so much in advance, and I wish you all of the best.

    • Brooke Bunce says:

      Hi Moriah!

You will receive a separate letter from the E.W. Scripps School if you have been formally accepted. Your adviser was right; you may not know officially until spring, but chances are you will receive your letter soon because the Scripps admission deadline was in December. I hope that helps! Please contact me if you need more information on anything at all (bb754009@ohio.edu).

    Hi,
I just visited for Ohio Up Close this Friday and I was really impressed by the j-school and Ohio University in general. My big concern is that as an out of state student (from Chicago) how many out of state students are there at scripps. I was accepted to other schools where I know there is large geographic diversity and I was wondering about scripps. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

First off, the fact that prssa had someone from live nation come and talk at their meeting this week got me so excited – I am interested in pursuing PR in the music industry! My first question is what, other than internships, could I be involved with at OU that might help prepare me for that?
Secondly, I have also thought about attending OSU. What can OU and Scripps give me, that OSU can’t?

    • kirby229 says:

      Hey Juliana!

There is a huge PR group here called ImPRessions, which does real PR work for various companies at both the local and national level. There is also Brick Beats, which is a publication about the local music scene in Athens (which is extensive).

I made the same decision when coming to OU; I’m from Columbus so I was choosing between OSU, OU and another college. OU stood out over OSU largely because OSU doesn’t even have a journalism major, there it’s communications. I didn’t fully understand the difference at the time, but communications encompasses a lot more than just PR or journalism, meaning you’d be required to take classes that may have nothing to do with what you’re interested in. OU’s journalism program is also largely regarded as one of the top 10 in the nation, whereas I don’t believe OSU’s communications program is ranked. And, of course, I’ve never gone to OSU so I don’t know if they have this same atmosphere, but Scripps has a very competitive but supportive student body, and everyone is encouraged by everyone to get involved. That’s how you get experience for jobs and internships, so it’s very beneficial.
